This course is run for us by Thames Paddleboarding

In association with local Scouting, CST are offering a two-day paddlesport course designed
and delivered by British Canoe Coaches for Scout Leaders wishing to undertake the necessary training to obtain their first Scout Water Activity Authorisation permit.

The course will introduce leaders to the exciting and varied world of paddlesport through
games and inspiring sessions in a very sheltered environment and include use of
assorted craft suitable for a first time experience (Katacanoes, sit-on- top kayaks, stand-up-
paddleboards, and open canoes).

We include improving your paddlesport skills and rescue techniques, with instruction in basic coaching and leadership techniques, skills such as kitting up a group and getting them safely afloat. Once on the water the course will cover initial familiarisation activities, games, challenges to support learning, use of mini journeys and how to inspire adventure and exploration. Key to the learning will be how to develop students paddling skills through structured sessions. Successful completion of this course will allow paddlesport sessions to be delivered in a way that is enjoyable, safe and rewarding.

Adopting continuous assessment, the candidates will be observed in preparation for obtaining a scouting water authorisation permit.

Candidates are required to have two course prerequisits: A current first aid certificate (we recommend the REC-1 Outdoor First Aid qualification) and a safeguarding certificate that is in date.

On successful completion of the course, you will be awarded the BC PSR certificate and will
be able to reference this course when making an application for a Scout adventurous activity
permit’. The permit will be restricted based on the ability the candidate demonstrates on the course and will state how many young people can go afloat and on what water classification. You will also
leave the course with a personal development plan, including recommendations.

Cost of this two day course is £160 that includes British Canoeing registration fees and use
of any watercraft used on the course. Note that course booking closes on 25th May 2024.
