Whitsun sees a range of courses specifically aimed at providing tuition for those that wish to Lead in a range of paddlesport craft. Our third course in this series focusses on the single bladed Open Canoe and the Coracle. This course has been created to give the youth leader or aspirant instructor a specific lesson in how to organise a canoe and coracle activity. The course includes activity planning, which could include warm ups, selection of equipment, boat carrying techniques and launching.

We show you how to introduce use of the paddle, how to sit in a boat (without it capsizing)  and how to manage a group on the water by establishing safe areas and boundaries in which to operate allowing you to keep your group close and under your control.

The session will introduce you to a number of Canoe specific games that you can use with your groups and later discusses what might go wrong in running a session so that you are better prepared to manage a situation should it occur.

After a short break, we repeat the exercise using Coracles, that are a bit more wobbly than canoes and come with their own specific management guidance but are paired with canoes as they use the same paddling techniques.

Note this course only loosly covers rescue techniques, participants should be familiar with canoe rescue techniques before attending this course.

This course is suited to anyone aged 16 or older.
