-->Whitsun sees a range of courses specifically aimed at providing tuition for those that wish to Lead in a range of paddlesport craft. Our fourth course in this series focusses on the humble Raft. This course has been created to give the youth leader or aspirant instructor a specific lesson in how to organise a Raft building activity. The course includes activity planning, the selection of kit, equipment carrying techniques, how to explain the activity and teach the skills required for the partipants to build a raft that does fall apart the moment they pick it up.
We show you how to introduce the use of a rope and how to tie simple knots before introducing the group to more complex knots and knot tieing techniques.
Having built the raft, we show you how to teach partipants how to correctly hold and use their paddle correctly and how to load the raft with crew so that the raft doesnt so easily capsize. We discuss then practice safe carrying methods and discuss what to do if something goes wrong.
Having built and launched the raft, we discuss how to manage a group on the water by establishing safe areas and boundaries in which to operate allowing you to keep your group close and under your control.
After a short break, we have a go at building a raft using the traditional techniques deploying poles rather than the bolted frames, requiring the tieing of lashings to hold the frame together before introducing the barrels.
The course will finally introduce you to a variety of rafting specific games that you can use with your groups and later discusses what might go wrong in running a session so that you are better prepared to manage a situation should it occur.
This course is suited to anyone aged 16 or older.
