The Canoe Sports Trust is joining forces with Nomad Kayak Club to run this afterschool club during term time in June and July. The Kayak Polo Club will commence on Wednesday 5th of June and run for six Wednesdays between 4pm and 6pm after which players will be invited to compete in a Youth Kayak Polo competition with other youth teams from across the London and South East Region.

Kayak Polo is a fast exciting game (much like football) instead played sitting in a Kayak. Kayak Polo has existed outdoors in Rickmansworth since the local club aquired and developed their own play facility.

The creation of rules in 1990 saw the sport grow from a small UK sport a world recognised sport. Great Britain have been a dominant force in the sport, especially throughout the early years winning many titles. GB Women won their first gold in Australia in 1996 and the Men took gold for the first time in Brazil in 2000. The Netherlands, Germany and Australia win most of the medals nowdays, a trend that the UK is looking to reverse.

British Canoe Polo – The Kayaking Team Sport

We will be using kayaks owned by Nomad Kayak Club and their polo pitch on Bury Lake. Attending this Club will teach you to become a profficient kayak paddler, directing the kayak where you want it to go, you will learn good ball throwing and recieving techniques and attack and defensive drills.

Games are normally played in two halves of between 6 and 8 minutes, you will be introduced to progressively longer periods of play thereby developing your strength and endurance.

Club sessions will cover capsize and rescues to give you the confidence to play more agressively, this will include using a spraydeck that helps to stop you from capsizing. Opportunities will be provided for members that want to learn to roll a kayak.

The six week Club will conclude with an opportunity for you to continue paddling with the Nomad Kayak Club should you wish to join their youth team who train and play every Wednesday evening and on Sunday mornings, giving you ample opportunity to improve your skills and get more involved in the sport.

The Afterschool Club is limited to 12 places, and is best suited to young people aged between 13 and 16 attending school years 9 and 10.

Our afterschool programs are specifically aimed at young people that would not normally have opportunities to participate in afterschool sport. Registration will be managed on a strictly first come first served basis, so when all 12 places are taken we will record a further 6 names, who will go in to a reserves list.

Due to the nature of the activity, each participant will need to be water confident and be able to swim 25 meters should the need to do so arise.

When you book your place, you will need to complete the bookings section below and pay the £48 fee (which works out at £8 each week). The application process will require you to provide your name, your parent/guardian name, an email address and a contact telephone or mobile number. Joining instructions will then be supplied to the email address provided as soon as a minimum number of places have been reserved. An online form will need to be completed along with a parent/guardian consent form which needs to be returned to us by email no later than the 26th of May.

Bookings for this opportunity open on Wednesday 1st May 2024
